National Gift Card Day 2026 is Sunday, October 25. It is an informal shopping observance, not a bank holiday. The useful part is timing: October is early enough to buy cards for November and December without standing in a mall line, and late enough that you are actually thinking about gifts.
This is not a doorbuster day. Treat it as a planning page: which card, which fees, which scams to skip.

When it is
Listings put Gift Card Day on October 25. There is no single government proclamation behind it. If you miss the 25th, the advice on this page still holds through December.

How to buy a card that does not annoy people
- Open-loop vs closed-loop. A Visa/Mastercard gift card works more places and often has activation fees. A store card (Amazon, Target, a local shop) has fewer fees and a smaller world.
- Buy from the brand or a known retailer, not a third-party discounter with a random domain. Gift-card scams are a whole industry.
- Email vs plastic. Email is fast and hard to lose in a drawer. Plastic is nicer in a stocking. Match the person.
- Check the expiration and inactivity fee on bank cards. US rules limited some of this, but the cardholder agreement still matters.
- Do not photograph the back or post the code. That is how cards get drained.
If you are trying to support a town, buy the card of a local business, not Amazon. We keep Amazon off Shop Local and Small Business Saturday on purpose.
Fees, balances, leftover money
Store cards usually have no purchase fee when you buy them from that store. Bank-branded cards often charge to activate. A leftover $4.17 on a closed-loop card is normal; spend it on something small rather than letting it sit for two years.

- No. It is a retail-friendly date on calendars. The consumer rules around cards in the US are real; the “day” is marketing.

- Usually no. Stolen or drained codes show up there. If the discount is large, assume the risk is large.
- When is the last minute to email a card?
- Minutes before you need it, if you buy from the actual brand. Physical cards still need shipping or a store run. Super Saturday (December 19) is the in-person backup.

Store gift cards became mainstream in the 1990s (Blockbuster is often cited as an early 1994 example). They replaced paper gift certificates because the balance lives in a database. National Gift Card Day is a later, informal way to talk about that habit before the holiday rush.
