Global Handwashing Day 2026
Wash with soap on Global Handwashing Day. October 15 is the fixed global advocacy date for handwashing with soap — a simple habit that cuts the spread of many infections when water and soap are actually available.
About Global Handwashing Day
History & origins
Global Handwashing Day falls on October 15 every year. It was founded in 2008 by the Global Handwashing Partnership (then often called the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing, or PPPHW). The first observance, in the International Year of Sanitation, mobilized large school and community handwashing events in dozens of countries. Partners have included public-health agencies, UNICEF, the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program, USAID, universities, and private soap companies, among others.
The day is advocacy and behavior-change work: promote washing with soap at critical times (before eating, after using the toilet), improve access to soap and water, and support hygiene programs in schools and clinics. It is endorsed by many governments and international institutions. It is not a U.S. federal holiday and should not be treated as a festival.
Why it matters
Hands move pathogens from surfaces and waste to food and faces. Soap and water remain among the cheapest disease-prevention tools when infrastructure exists; where it does not, the day also points at the need for taps, tippy taps, and soap supply — not only slogans.
How to celebrate
Wash your hands with soap at the critical times and teach children the same. Check whether a school or clinic nearby needs soap or handwashing stations. Share accurate public-health guidance, not miracle claims. Support organizations that fund water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) where access is lacking. Keep the tone practical.
