History & origins

On 25 August 2023, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/77/324 proclaiming 21 December as World Basketball Day. The date commemorates the anniversary of the first basketball game, played on 21 December 1891 at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, after Canadian physical-education instructor Dr. James Naismith designed an indoor winter sport for his students. The Philippines initiated the resolution, with main co-sponsors including Indonesia, Nicaragua, and Peru; reporting around the first UN celebration noted dozens of co-sponsoring countries. The first World Basketball Day at the United Nations was marked on 21 December 2023. It is a UN international day, not a U.S. federal holiday.

Basketball spread quickly from that Springfield gym into schools, clubs, the Olympics, and professional leagues worldwide. Women’s play began within a year of the invention, and the sport is now a grassroots pickup game as much as a televised spectacle. The UN resolution frames basketball as a popular team sport that can support peace, development, inclusion, and gender equality — and invites people everywhere to play, watch, read about, or otherwise connect through the game.

Two December collisions confuse searchers. Informal U.S. calendars often list Play Basketball Day on December 2 — a separate participation-style date, not the UN observance. Why it matters
