About World Meditation Day

History & origins

On 6 December 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/79/137 proclaiming 21 December as World Meditation Day. UN materials describe a core group of Member States — including Liechtenstein, Andorra, Mexico, Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka — and note that the resolution was adopted by consensus. The UN’s observance page frames the day as raising awareness of meditation and recalling the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. The first UN World Meditation Day was marked in December 2024. It is a UN international day, not a U.S. federal holiday.

December 21 sits near the December solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, which some explainers mention as a seasonal backdrop for a day of stillness. The legal date, however, is the one in the resolution: 21 December.

An older unofficial “World Meditation Day” (and overlapping “National Meditation Day” listings) is widely placed on May 21. TheDayOf already covers that May date on a separate National Meditation Day page. Those May listings are not the UN observance. If a wellness site still says World Meditation Day is May 21, it is using the pre-2024 informal calendar, not A/RES/79/137. This page is December 21 only.

This write-up stays secular. Meditation here means beginner practices anyone can try: attention to the breath, a short body scan, or a slow walk. It is not a sermon, not a conversion moment, and not medical treatment.

Why it matters

A UN date does not make anyone “good at” meditation. It does give schools, offices, and households permission to try five quiet minutes without turning the day into a wellness-industry pitch. Beginners often need that permission more than they need new vocabulary.

How to celebrate

Set a timer for five minutes and sit in a chair with both feet on the floor. Notice the breath without forcing it. If the mind wanders — it will — return to the next inhale. Try a slow body scan from feet to head. Walk around a block and name five sounds. Use an app only if it helps you start; silence works. Pair a short sit with ordinary December tasks: after breakfast, before a meeting, or while a kettle boils. Invite a friend to sit quietly in the same room, no guided theology required. Skip any claim that one session will cure anxiety, insomnia, or pain. If you already have a faith-based practice, you can keep it private; this page does not teach it.
