International Day of Charity

History & origins

International Day of Charity is a United Nations observance designated by the UN General Assembly in resolution A/RES/67/105. The UN chose September 5 to coincide with the anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death and to recognize the role of charitable organizations and individuals in easing human suffering. It is an international observance rather than a commercial holiday, and it is most closely associated with global philanthropy and volunteer action.

Why it matters

International Day of Charity highlights how donations, volunteering, and community support help address poverty, disaster relief, health needs, and other humanitarian challenges.
