Pocky Day falls on November 11. Ezaki Glico, the Japanese company behind Pocky (chocolate- or cream-coated biscuit sticks with a bare “handle” end), has promoted the date since 1999. The visual joke is built in: 11/11 looks like four sticks. Glico’s campaign also ties to Pretz, a savory sister stick, sometimes under the joint “Pocky & Pretz Day” name. The Japan Anniversary Association has recognized the memorial day.

Pocky launched in Japan in 1966 (after an earlier chocolate-stick experiment). The bare-end handle made the snack less messy than a fully coated stick. The product later spread internationally in many flavors.
