Archibald Query of Somerville, Massachusetts, sold a marshmallow creme door to door; in 1920 he sold his recipe to H. Allen Durkee and Fred L. Mower of Swampscott, who built Durkee-Mower Inc. and the Marshmallow Fluff brand still made in Massachusetts. The name “fluffernutter” for the peanut-butter-and-Fluff sandwich was coined in 1960 by an advertising firm working for Durkee-Mower. Somerville later hosted “What the Fluff?” festivals celebrating that local candy history. The October 8 food day sits on top of that story; it is not a state or federal holiday.
