About National Walk to School Day
History & origins
National Walk to School Day moves. The internationally promoted date is the first Wednesday of October. In 2026 that is Wednesday, October 7. Schools that cannot use that Wednesday are encouraged to pick another day in October.
The idea started in the United Kingdom. In 1995 a handful of Hertfordshire primary schools walked as part of Green Transport Week; the Pedestrians Association (later Living Streets) helped take Walk to School national in 1996. In the United States, the Partnership for a Walkable America sponsored the first National Walk Our Children to School Day in Chicago in 1997, modeled on the UK events. In 2000 the U.S., UK, and Canada joined for the first International Walk to School Day. In 2006 the International Walk to School Committee expanded the push to International Walk to School Month, all of October.
U.S. coordination now lives at walkbiketoschool.org, maintained by the UNC Highway Safety Research Center. The current U.S. name is often Walk & Roll to School Day, to include wheelchairs, scooters, and bikes. Bike & Roll to School Day is a separate national date in May. Safe Routes to School programs grew in part from this movement.
Why it matters
The school run is where many towns notice missing sidewalks, speeding cars, and kids who live too far to walk the whole way. The day is not a fitness contest. It is a chance to practice a walking school bus, to let families see the route, and to ask for safer crossings. Schools may still hold a remote “park and walk” for students who are bused.
How to celebrate
Walk or roll with a child on the promoted Wednesday, or on another October morning that fits the school calendar. Start a walking school bus with pickup points. If the full trip is too far, park a few blocks away and walk the last stretch. Register the event at walkbiketoschool.org so it counts. Talk about one safety rule — eye contact at driveways, lights, or a better crossing — rather than only taking photos. Bike to School Day in May is a different date; do not collapse the two.
