National Coming Out Day falls on October 11. It is an LGBTQ awareness date, not a U.S. federal holiday.
The date is the first anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, held 11 October 1987. That weekend also included the first public display of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. Psychologist Rob Eichberg (founder of the workshop The Experience) and activist Jean O’Leary (then head of National Gay Rights Advocates in Los Angeles) organized the first National Coming Out Day for 11 October 1988. They framed coming out to family, friends, and colleagues as a basic form of political action, arguing that silence and isolation feed homophobia. The first year was organized from NGRA’s West Hollywood offices and was marked in 18 states, with coverage from national news outlets.
Artist Keith Haring created the well-known image of a figure stepping out of a closet, used as an early logo. In 1993 the National Coming Out Day organization merged with the Human Rights Campaign Fund; HRC later ran a National Coming Out Project. Eichberg died in 1995 of complications from AIDS.
Coming out is personal. The day is not a deadline, and no one should be outed.
Why it matters
Visibility still changes how families and workplaces behave, and it still carries risk. The day exists so that people who want to be open have a shared date and a set of resources, and so that allies remember that support is practical — using someone’s name, stopping a joke, knowing the local clinic — not a slogan. It is not a party if someone is unsafe.
How to celebrate
If you want to come out, choose one trusted person and do it on your own terms; there is no requirement to do it today. If you are already out, offer to listen, not to announce someone else. Share accurate local resources (a community center, a school GSA, HRC’s coming-out guides) rather than a spectacle. Do not out anyone. If you are a parent, teacher, or manager, say clearly that people can be themselves here. For many, the most useful “celebration” is a private conversation.
