USA TODAY later reported the origin this way: Leap Day 1992 fell on a Saturday (29 February), and the magazine asked readers to spend that extra day doing something good for someone else. The response was large enough that the project became annual, parked on the fourth Saturday of October. Points of Light, the national volunteer organization that grew out of President George H.W. Bush’s “thousand points of light” theme, partnered on the day. Newman's Own sponsored awards for projects in some years. USA WEEKEND later ceased publication; the date continues as a grassroots and Points of Light–associated day of service.
It is not a federal holiday. In 2026 it shares the calendar with United Nations Day and National Food Day; keep the pages separate. It is also not Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service (January) or 9/11 Day of Service (September).
