Leif Erikson Day is observed on October 9. Under U.S. law (now 36 U.S.C. § 114, from Public Law 88-566 of September 2, 1964), the President may issue a proclamation designating October 9 as Leif Erikson Day. Presidents have done so annually since. Earlier, in 1935, Congress and President Franklin D. Roosevelt recognized a Leif Erikson Day for that year only.
Leif Erikson (Old Norse Leifr Eiríksson) was a Norse explorer, son of Erik the Red, associated in the Icelandic sagas with a voyage to a place called Vinland — widely linked by scholars to coastal areas of northeastern North America around the year 1000. Archaeological work at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland confirmed a Norse presence in North America. Congress chose October 9 not as Erikson’s birthday but in connection with October 9, 1825, when the Norwegian sloop Restauration arrived in New York Harbor, an early landmark of organized Norwegian immigration to the United States.
The day is a U.S. national observance by proclamation. It is not a federal public holiday that closes banks or federal offices nationwide.
