After World War II Austria was occupied by the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. The Austrian State Treaty, signed at Belvedere Palace on 15 May 1955 and in force from 27 July 1955, restored an independent democratic Austria. Occupation forces left by 25 October 1955.
On 26 October 1955 the Austrian Parliament enacted the constitutional law declaring permanent neutrality of Austria’s own free will — including a pledge not to join military alliances or host foreign bases. That neutrality law, not the State Treaty text itself, is what the national holiday commemorates. The day was called Day of the Flag for a time and has been the National Day since 1965.
