National Teddy Bear Day 2026

National Teddy Bear Day is an informal observance marked on September 9. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday, September 9. It celebrates the stuffed teddy bear — named after Theodore Roosevelt — and is not a federal holiday. No verified founder of the September 9 label is documented.

Why “teddy” (popular account)

In 1902, a widely told story says President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a captured bear on a hunting trip. Political cartoons followed; toy makers soon sold stuffed “Teddy’s bears.” Treat this as the popular naming account — not a wildlife-policy seminar and not proof that Roosevelt invented the September 9 calendar day.

Early 1900s toy makers in the U.S. and Germany helped turn the cartoon moment into a mass-market plush toy. That product history is stronger than the food-day-style founder claim for September 9, which remains unclear.

Not Roosevelt’s birthday. Theodore Roosevelt was born October 27 — a different date. Name link only.

How to mark National Teddy Bear Day

1. Gift a bear to someone who would actually keep it.
2. Donate a new bear to a hospital drive or toy collection that accepts them.
3. Repair an old bear (loose eye, ripped seam) instead of buying another.
4. Read a bear story with a kid — five minutes counts.
5. Skip impulse plastic if the shelf is already full — celebrate by sorting and keeping favorites.
