Fish and chips as a meal is older than the day: fried fish and fried potato shops spread through Victorian and early twentieth-century Britain and became a working staple wrapped in paper, salted, and doused in vinegar. Cod and haddock are the classic species; campaigns around the day also encourage trying other responsibly sourced white fish such as hake or pollock.
