International Day of the Potato 2026

History & origins

On 8 December 2023, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/78/123 proclaiming 30 May as the International Day of the Potato. The decision was unanimous. Peru championed the proposal, building on an FAO Conference resolution of July 2023 and on the earlier International Year of the Potato in 2008. FAO welcomed the day as a chance to highlight a crop regularly consumed by billions and important for food security and nutrition. The first International Day of the Potato was observed in 2024.

Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) were domesticated in the Andes. Peru remains a center of potato diversity, with many native varieties beyond the russets and reds common in North American grocery bins. FAO often describes the potato as the world’s third most important food crop for human consumption after rice and wheat. The UN day is about that global crop — farmers, nutrition, and culture — not only fries.

Two neighboring dates confuse searchers. U.S. National Potato Day is widely listed on August 19; that is an informal North American food day, not the UN observance. Peru’s Día Nacional de la Papa also falls on May 30. Peru established that national commemoration in 2005 to honor native varieties and small farmers. The UN date matches Peru’s national date and grew from Peruvian diplomacy, but the UN day is an international observance for all Member States.

Why it matters

Potatoes are affordable calories and vitamin C in many diets, and they grow in a wide range of climates. A UN date is a chance to thank growers, try a variety you have never cooked, and remember that “potato” is a family of foods, not a single beige spud.

How to celebrate

Cook one potato dish you already love and one you have never tried — roasted wedges, a simple boil with salt, mashed, a Peruvian-style salad, or a skillet hash. Buy two varieties at a market and compare texture. Leave edible skins on when it suits the recipe to cut waste. Read a short FAO or UN explainer instead of repeating unsourced “fun facts.” If you garden, note that seed potatoes are planted pieces, not grocery leftovers treated with sprout inhibitor. Support a local farm stand if you have one. Talk with kids about Andean origin, not just French fries. And if someone sends you an August 19 graphic, file it under National Potato Day, not this UN date.
